Public policy concerning education in prisons decisively emphasizes punitive programming over rehabilitate or educational programming. In regards to higher education in prisons the persuasive public echo of â€Å"why should criminals get for free what the rest of us pay for† is a falsehood built on the backs of these rulings. I would argue that the education paid for through incarceration entails a greater personal cost of freedoms than a paid tuition could ever represent. I doubt anyone would ever go to prison to obtain a â€Å"free† education. The ever-increasing costs of higher education invoke a regime of scarcity that produces anxiety within the working and middle class. Higher education no longer represents automatic future economic security, furthering social fear. I would argue against the elimination of higher education in prisons; research shows that prison education reduces recidivism rates and improves public safety (Chappell). Education behind bars means a greater likelihood of post-release employment. Post-release employment means stability and independence. Stability and independence mean a lower chance of recidivism. When I finished FTA Iwas of course stunned by the death of Catherine and thebaby and Henrys sudden solitude. What happens now? Ifelt, as I so often do when I finish a book that I want to goon forever. This is infinitely more difficult with a book thathas no conclusion, and FTA leaves a reader not onlyemotionally exhausted but also just as alone as Henry andwith nowhere to go. The entire work was aware of where itwas going and what was going to happen next, and then tostop the way it did was unfair. Now, Ive read enoughessays while deciding which would be the topic for my classpresentation that I know many people see that the unfairnessof life and the insignificance of our free will are apparentlythe most important themes in the book, but I dont agree. Henry is no dummy and hecould easily tell that everything was not all correct with Cat,which leads to the question of his love for her. You mustadmit that Cat is a bit well flaky when they first meet. Sheloses that persona soon enough, although I couldnt help butdistrust her integrity until somewhere in the middle of thefourth Book. It is also difficult to believe wholeheartedly inhis love for her until much later in their relationship, and itleaves me wondering if he is leaving his involvement in thewar because of his unfailing love for Cat or if Cat and anyfeelings he has for her are just excuses to escape the insanityof the war he experiences in the third Book. This is a very shadowy corner of the human psyche, there is no black and white when it comes to situations like this, only endless shades of grey that bleed into each other endlessly. Many people’s idea of torture is inflicting devastating bodily harm on a person’s body, and that is what the dictionary says it is, but in these modern times, the main element of political torture is the presence of fear, no bodily harm is necessary in some cases. The most commonly used method of torture is water boarding, which simulates drowning, and has been a key element in preventing insurgent operations. Many people argue that torture yields faulty or incomplete intelligence, but there are documented situations where torture has aided in saving lives. These are all methods of torture that will not leave physical scars, they are not pleasant by any means, but they will not leave scars, which is the number one criterion for American torture. This topic, I feel, will never be resolved completely, people feel too strongly on both sides, but I do feel that in some situations, torture should be able to be applied to prisoners. As long as we follow our guidelines for enhanced interrogation, I feel there shouldn’t be as big of an ethical debate, as long as there is no physical harm done to the prisoner; we should be able to use these methods to obtain pertinent information.
